In Persian craftsmanship, Khatamkari decorates textures with mosaic-like patterns composed of small triangles. These geometric patterns are arranged systematically, combining triangles made from various materials such as wood, metal, and bone. The finer and more intricate the triangles, the higher the quality of the Khatam. In a Khatam design, a minimum of three triangles is used for the smallest geometric unit, and up to four hundred triangles can be employed for the largest unit.

To create a Khatam, an artist first draws the desired pattern with the guidance of a master. Wooden, bone, and metal triangles are then skillfully placed together by hand, adhered with glue, and tightly wound with thread to form a structure known as a "parah" (winding). This process is repeated until the desired pattern is achieved. The assembly is then subjected to pressure and pressing, undergoing several stages of cutting and gluing thin layers of wood around the initial pattern. This results in creating a Khatam with intricate patterns covering the entire surface.
