In Persian, the term "tar" means "string", and a Persian tar is a vibrating musical instrument with strings. The first note is produced by a taut vibrating string. These vibrating strings are called chordophones. The Persians call their favorite instrument "Târ-e Shirâz," which means "Tar from Shiraz." The Persian tar is simply a stringed instrument played with a plectrum. A plectrum is a small tool or device used to pluck or strum stringed instruments.
