In a post that received two million likes within hours despite an Instagram ban, Daei said he did it “to be by your side in my homeland and express sympathy with all the families who lost loved ones these days.”

Protests erupted in Iran after the September 16 death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who was arrested for allegedly wearing her hijab improperly. While being held in Tehran by the morality police, she died from injuries sustained during interrogation.

Daei, who held the record for the world’s most international goals until last year when Ronaldo broke it, has also supported all the protests.

He has always been a pioneer in assisting the people of his country. After a devastating earthquake hit the western Kermanshah province in November 2017, he rushed to help people there, opening an account to receive contributions from across the country.
